Christmas Tunes and CPR - Save a Life This Festive Season

Get into the festive rhythm with White Cross Training!

The festive season is a time for joy, giving, and plenty of music. But did you know that the rhythm of certain Christmas songs can literally help save lives and match that of CPR?

Why BPM Matters in CPR

Did you know CPR should be practiced at 100-120 bpm? Our traditional Christmas tunes might just be the perfect tempo! Singing a song in your head or out loud when carrying out CPR, can help you feel the beat, keeping you calm and focused. The adrenaline rush in a real situation might make you speed up, but singing along can be your secret weapon for maintaining a steady pace, helping to ensure that blood continues to flow to vital organs until professional medical help arrives.

So with that in mind, let’s look at some songs for the festive season to help with CPR…

Practicing CPR with Music

Listening to songs in the 100–120 BPM range can be a useful tool when practicing CPR techniques. Here’s how to incorporate these festive tunes into your first aid practise:

  • Practise on a manakin (or a firm pillow or cushion): Play one of the songs above and time your compressions to the beat.
  • Keep it familiar: Choose songs you know by heart so you can stay focused on the task.

While it’s great to associate CPR rhythms with memorable songs, remember that proper training is essential. So make sure to check out our many different first aid courses.

The Power of Music in Emergencies
