Dental Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED Level 2 (VTQ)

Jul 28 @ 9:15 am - 1:15 pm
A First Aid Instructor showing course attendees how to perform CPR during a Basic Life Support course.

The Dental Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED Level 2 (VTQ) course is designed specifically for dentists and dental care professionals working in general dental practice. It is suitable for dental nurses, hygienists, therapists, practice managers, and other members of the dental team who may be required to respond to medical emergencies within the dental setting.

The aim of this training is to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding required to recognise and manage medical emergencies in dental practice, deliver effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and safely use and manage an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The course is designed to build confidence so you can act promptly and appropriately in a life-threatening situation.

This course covers Basic Life Support skills for adults, children and infants, with specific relevance to dentistry and the dental practice environment. Content includes safety precautions, initial patient assessment, the recovery position, CPR, AED, choking management, and the safe use of basic oxygen. The course also includes the recognition and management of common medical emergencies encountered in dental settings, including epilepsy, asthma and anaphylactic reactions.

Training is delivered through a combination of clear, structured theory and hands-on practical scenarios, allowing you to practise essential skills under the guidance of an experienced instructor and apply them directly to situations relevant to dental practice.

The course is delivered in line with the latest UK Resuscitation Council and ERC guidelines, and meets the required standards for clinical practice and training for dental practitioners and dental care professionals. It is aligned with professional expectations for emergency preparedness in general dental practice.

This CPD course meets the General Dental Council (GDC) development outcome C and comes with a Certified CPD statement, issued in line with GDC guidelines and recognised national standards. On successful completion, you will receive a Dental Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED Level 2 (VTQ) certificate, valid for one year.

To ensure high-quality learning and ample opportunity for practical skill development, course numbers are limited. This allows each learner to fully engage with the practical elements of the training and ask questions relevant to their role within the dental team.
