How Often Should First Aid Training Be Refreshed?

Is your first aid certificate still valid? And even if it is, how confident would you feel using those skills in a real emergency? These are two different questions, and they’re both important.

For businesses across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall, keeping first aid training up to date is about more than remembering when a certificate expires. It’s about making sure the people responsible for helping in an emergency feel prepared to act.

How often do you need to renew first aid training?

In the UK, workplace first aid qualifications such as Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) are normally valid for three years.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also strongly recommends that qualified workplace first aiders complete annual refresher training during those three years.

  • Every year: Refresher training is strongly recommended to help maintain your skills.
  • Every three years: You need to renew or requalify to continue acting as a qualified workplace first aider.

Annual refresher training is not a legal requirement in itself, but employers should consider it as part of maintaining suitable first aid provision.

Why refresh first aid skills every year?

First aid is practical. You can understand something perfectly during a course, but remembering exactly what to do two years later can be more difficult.

Think about CPR. When did you last practise chest compressions on a manikin? Would you feel confident using a defibrillator? Would you recognise the signs of a serious emergency?

Regular practice gives people the opportunity to revisit these skills, ask questions and build confidence.

At White Cross Training, we believe that feeling comfortable enough to act is just as important as remembering the information.

What’s the difference between refresher training and requalification?

This is where people sometimes get confused.

Annual first aid refresher training

Refresher training is designed to keep existing skills fresh. It might include CPR, defibrillator use, managing an unresponsive casualty and responding to serious bleeding.

It does not extend the expiry date of your existing first aid qualification.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) renewal

If you hold a one-day EFAW qualification, you normally renew it by completing the one-day course again.

First Aid at Work (FAW) requalification

If you hold a three-day FAW qualification, you can normally complete a two-day FAW Requalification course rather than repeating the full three days.

The shorter course covers the required content at a faster pace, so it’s important that your existing knowledge and skills are reasonably current.

What happens if my first aid certificate has expired?

If your workplace first aid certificate expires, you should not rely on it as evidence of a current qualification for your employer’s first aid arrangements.

For FAW, HSE guidance recommends considering the full three-day course where a considerable period has passed since expiry, particularly more than one month.

Eligibility for a shorter requalification course may also depend on the awarding organisation’s requirements.

The best approach is to book your training before the certificate expires. It avoids unnecessary gaps in your workplace first aid cover.

Should employers keep track of first aid certificate expiry dates?

Absolutely.

For employers, it’s worth keeping a simple record of who is trained, which qualification they hold and when their certificate expires.

It’s also important to consider holidays, sickness, shift patterns and whether enough trained people are available throughout the working day.

A certificate renewal is also a good opportunity to review whether your workplace’s first aid needs have changed.

Frequently asked questions

Is annual first aid refresher training compulsory?

No. The HSE strongly recommends annual refresher training for workplace first aiders, but it is not a legal requirement in itself.

How long does a First Aid at Work certificate last?

A First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate is normally valid for three years.

How long does an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate last?

An Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate is normally valid for three years.

Can I renew my first aid certificate online?

A fully online course alone does not normally meet the practical training and assessment requirements for renewing an EFAW or FAW workplace qualification. Some courses may use blended learning, combining online theory with face-to-face practical training and assessment.

Does annual refresher training extend my certificate?

No. Refresher training helps maintain your knowledge and practical skills, but you still need to complete the appropriate requalification before your certificate expires.
